Magnitude 4.2 earthquake south of Sydney

12 Dec 2003

An earthquake of Richter magnitude 4.2 occurred at 09:19 pm AEDT on Thursday 11 December, with its epicentre near Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands region of NSW. This is about 100 kilometres south of Sydney.

It was strongly recorded on seismographs operated by the ES&S Seismology Research Centre throughout New South Wales and Victoria.

No reports of any structural damage have been received, but an earthquake of this magnitude could cause minor damage to a distance of a few kilometres from the epicentre. A few aftershocks have been recorded.

Reports of the main earthquake being felt have been received from Bowral and Canberra, and as far as north shore Sydney. A magnitude 4.2 earthquake would normally be felt over a radius of about 80 to 120 kilometres.

For the latest details on this and other recent earthquakes, see the Seismology Research Centre web page, or contact the Operations Manager of the SRC, Adam Pascale, at ES&S during working hours using the contact details on the home page.
